What happens in therapy?

  • What is talk therapy?

Talk therapy is a variety of processes and approaches which aim to help us deal with, and overcome issues, that are causing emotional distress or making life feel uncomfortable.

Working weekly with a trained & professional therapist offers a regular, dedicated time and space in which to explore difficult feelings, thoughts and experiences and their impact on day to day life.

As your therapist, I’m here to listen without judgement and can offer professional, experience baned insights and reflections that you may find helpful. Whilst I don’t offer advice as such, I will support you as you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences.

  • What can you expect in sessions?

Often people find the greatest relief in therapy comes from simply sharing worries and fears with someone who listens attentively, doesn’t judge, and doesn’t try to ‘fix’ or problem-solve.

During our sessions, I wil encourage you to explore and express honest feelings and emotions. By sharing in this way you’ll develop a better understanding of your patterns - how you relate to yourself, to your past, and to people and situations around you.

  • Is therapy confidential?

All qualified counsellors and therapists should follow an ethical code of practice. As an individual member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists [BACP], I follow their Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, [this has a helpful section [page 21] on confidentiality].

What you share in sessions will remain confidential. There are some limitations to this confidentiality which we will take time to discuss and agree at our first session.

  • What can therapy help with?

People attend therapy for the widest variety of reasons, just a few are listed below.

    • the difficult end of a relationship

    • bereavement or loss

    • challenging family relationships

    • depression or low moods

    • anxiety or excessive worrying

    • work stress or financial worries

    • health anxiety

    • relationship issues

This is by no means an exhaustive list, if you’re not sure whether therapy is for you, why not book a free assessment session and we can talk through what you’re dealing with and ways in which I can help.

  • How long does therapy last?

Each counselling session lasts 50 minutes - this is called the therapeutic hour - and will take place on the same day, at the same time each week.

In terms of the process, sessions can take place over a few weeks, or over a longer period of months or years. The number of sessions you have will be determined by you, the client, I may make recommendations but ultimately it will always be your decision.

  • More questions?

I am happy to answer any questions you may have about therapy in general, or about my own approach and processes.

Simply book a free assessment session and we can take it from there.

In addition, you may find some additional helpful information via the BACP website or via the MIND website.
